As virtual meetings have become the norm, innovative software developers are pushing the technology forward in some amazing ways. Online gatherings are no longer limited to team meetings and webinars using same old video calling tools.
All types of events, including trade shows and industry conferences, can now be produced and attended remotely. New platforms are being developed, and new features added to existing platforms, to more closely replicate the live experience.
The ability to present slides, stream video, collaborate on a whiteboard, and chat with the group or individual members are now just table stakes. Today’s virtual event platforms are adding features like virtual expo halls and exhibitor booths, 3D environments and avatars, social media integration, gamification, one-to-one video networking, content libraries, and detailed attendee activity analytics.
As noted previously in this list of top webinar tools, what separates compelling must-attend events from ho-hum gatherings is the quality of the content, promotion, presenters, and—increasingly—the underlying technology platform. That’s especially true in the realm of virtual events and virtual team building activities that go beyond traditional webinars and webcasts.
If you are involved in planning and producing online events—and you’re ready to venture beyond standard tools like WebEx, Zoom, and Google Meet—here are more than two dozen alternatives that can help take your event to a whole new level.
A quick note on the ranking methodology: These 22 24 26 27 32 37 49 tools were searched across five sites: Capterra, G2Crowd, TrustRadius, SoftwareAdvice, and GetApp. They were ranked on both the number of total reviews (popularity) and average ratings (quality). Those scores were then combined to produce an overall rank; though, as explained below, most of these tools didn’t have enough ratings to produce a valid combined score.

Samantha Evans says
How are any of these “best” when none of them address accessibility and therefore access for people with disabilities to host, attend, or engage in the platform?
How is accessibility not part of any virtual event platform evaluation rubric?
Tom Pick says
Hi Samantha, thank you for making an excellent point. Are there virtual event tools that do better in terms of accessibility? As for how these specific vendors are addressing the issue, you’d need to contact them directly. Take care, stay well.
Stephanie W says
Hi Samantha. Communique Conferencing https://www.virtualtradeshowhosting.com has several options to accommodate attendees with disabilities including a section 508 environment option and closed captioning for sessions.
Tom Pick says
Hi Stephanie — thanks for jumping in! And it’s wonderful that Communique provides those capabilities.

Hey Tom! I want to be upfront – I work in marketing at Freeman. Wondering why Freeman’s OnlineEvent Pro virtual event platform isn’t included in this list? We believe our product is the best out there for large scale events – we’ve hosted 85,000 attendees at a single event with robust learning, networking and engagement capabilities. We also believe we’re the best end-to-end solution offering – we can support customers with marketing, content and event design strategies as well as content capture, speaker support and production capabilities. Happy to provide any additional information you need. Here’s the link to learn more: https://www.freeman.com/online-event/
Tom Pick says
Hi Kelly, thanks for stopping by! No idea why Freeman’s tool didn’t surface in my research, but I will check into it. I’m curious though as to why Freeman would develop its own technology rather than focusing on your strength in services and partnering with one of the enterprise-level event technology platform vendors. In any case, I will take a look!
