Are you looking to expand your online presence to reach a wider range of customers? Then hurry up to pick a targeted domain name! Topic-focused microsites can increase your presence in search results while appealing to new buyers, sub-markets, or other groups.
To help you get started, here’s an interesting infographic on the topic, 101 Fascinating Facts You Didn’t Know About Domain Names created by the professionals at webmastersjury.com.
However, before diving into the details and intricacies of domain names, here’s a quick summary presenting 10 major facts about domain names.
-
- Domain names were free until 1995. Today there is, of course, an annual fee. The amount depends on the type of top-level domain (TLD) registered.
- Domain names have a life cycle. They can be registered for any period from one to 10 years. However, you can register a domain for 20-100 years with the help of Network Solutions.
- You have to renew your domain names, as they will expire one day. If you fail to renew your domain name you enter an expiry and then a redemption period. You need to pay $100 or more to get it back during the redemption period.
- Microsoft forgot to renew their Hotmail.co.uk back in 2003.
- Regions Bank, US with 1,700 branches simply forgot to renew their domain in 2013.
- Domain registrations are available in .net, .com, .org and many other extensions.
- About 13% of the daily .com registrations are made of short, 5-6 character domain names.
- There is a minimum length for a domain name: two characters. All possible combinations of standard characters are allowed (but good luck getting one of these!).
- You might think a domain name like Internet.com would be among the most expensive of all time—and you’d be right. However, it’s only #6 on that list. What’s at #1? LasVegas.com.
- However strange this may sound, you can register Soviet Union .su domains even now.
And now, the rest of the facts:

Great article Tom!
I want to ask you a question.
Would you rather BUY a domain that is already established with high DA, but the name is not really catchy.
Or would you buy a domain and build it from the scratch?
Tom Pick says
Thank you Filip! Personally, I wouldn’t buy a domain on the (generally expensive) secondary market if it was not catchy. Domain authority helps with search, but it’s one of many factors.
