104 Fascinating Social Media and Marketing Statistics for 2014 (and 2015)

Looking at marketing surveys and studies from the past year, a few trends are clear, among them that buyers are firmly (and increasingly) in control of the purchase cycle. They prefer searching to being found, and will often be close to their final decision point before talking to a salesperson.

Marketing Trends 2014 - 2015In response, marketers are producing an increasing amount and variety of content to support all stages of the decision process. They’re distributing and promoting this content through all channels in the web presence optimization (WPO) model, to maximize their opportunities to be “found” online when buyers are looking.

And although digital is taking an increasing share of marketing budgets, the move to online is paradoxically making some old-school tactics even more valuable.

What do buyers say is the most important signal of vendor credibility? What type of content is most effective? What do marketers rate as the single most valuable SEO tactic? What are the top barriers to adopting social business practices?

9 General Marketing Stats

1. People want to be in control of the content they receive:

  • • 86% of people skip TV commercials.
  • • 44% of direct mail is never opened.
  • • 91% of people have unsubscribed from company emails they previously opted into.

  11. While I no longer think that social media and social customer service are new ideas, apparently many companies still do. These stats and facts should help make the case for the importance social media can have on a business. I’d be impressed with just a dozen facts, but this post has more than 100!

    Strengthening your image on sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Google+ and Pinterest lets your customers interact with you on an entirely new level.

    Simply put, the longer you can keep your company in the heads of those motivated customers, the better the chance of them coming to YOU when they need your product.

  18. You left out what I consider to be the most important statistic. A recent study by BrightEdge shows that 51% of all website traffic comes from organic search whereas 5% comes from all social media websites combinted.

  19. Thanks for the comment Kevin. I don’t think the BrightEdge research is wrong, but it is misleading. If one separates numbers for corporate websites vs. corporate blogs, the search number sound generally right. But 5% would be an impressive amount of social traffic to a corporate website, while sub-par for a blog (should be at least in the 10-15% range). Just reporting the figures in that manner also ignores the organic search benefits of social media efforts.
